He Would Not Take It Away

What wouldn’t “He” take away? I’ll get to that in few minutes.  I’m going to tell you the story of Mary and Martha. Sisters. They are so important, they are mentioned in the Bible. (Luke 10:38-41)

Which, By the way, is the best-selling book of all time. Estimated to have sold over 5 billion copies. I’d say that is pretty significant.

Jesus and His disciples were traveling and came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to Him and his disciples. Now it says, “Martha” opened her home. So that means it was her home. She probably felt pretty special opening her home to such a guest. This was the Messiah! A King! She probably was known for hosting and putting on a good Tupperware party. She had what it takes to Host. This was her niche! It was her time to shine.

Martha had a sister named Mary. No Biblical reference, but since it said it was Martha’s home, I’m just taking a wild guess Mary is staying here. Since Martha is a hospitable woman, she is probably playing host to her sister. She loves her sister and enjoys doing these things. HOWEVER, when company comes, even if she was a guest in her home, she probably felt like her sister should help her out. Lift a hand. I mean she was giving her a place to live!

Mary was sitting at the Lord’s feet. She was listening to what He was saying. Hanging on to every word. Soaking up Jesus’ words. Can you imagine?! Sitting at the LORDS feet! Listening to His words. The rest of the room fading away. Nothing else matters. It just becomes you and His love. Now that had to be one incredible experience.

However, Martha was distracted. (Isn’t that how it is sometimes. The Lord can be right in front of us, but we are too distracted to see and hear Him.) All the preparations had to be made. She worried about what needed to be done. Was everything taken care of around the house? Was the food ready? Was the house clean? Did she have enough of everything?  She came to the Lord and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work all by myself? Tell her to help me!”

Beautiful Mornings

First off, imagine telling the LORD what to do. Oh no she didn’t! Martha needed to take a breath! She was running around frustrated and getting upset with her sister and then directed it to Jesus. Isn’t that just like us. We get upset and then take it out on others. I just love how gentle, but firm and with compassion Jesus answered her.

“Martha, Martha, the Lord answered, “You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her.”

Oh how we need the Marthas. They know how to get things done. Keep serving. Keep Doing. Keep organizing. The Bible even says how much Jesus loves Martha. (John 11:5) But Oh how we need the Marys. The seekers. The searchers. The listeners. The learners. The devoted. She was soaking in the word. Planting the word. (James 1:21) in Romans 10:17 it says, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. – His word has such POWER and Jesus said he would not take that away from her.

He saw two women with very different traits and talents. We need both Mary and Marthas. In this story it shows us that if you are overwhelmed today, remember, You only need one thing. God’s word. He will not take it away.
