Do you ever question where God is when you are going through a storm? Ever wonder how during a time of chaos you feel like He is nowhere to be found? Almost like He is sleeping?
The disciples sure felt this way. In fact Jesus was ACTUALLY sleeping! Jesus had just preached to a crowd & gets in a boat “with” the disciples and says that they will go to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. (Please not that word “with”, is a very important word.) His disciples were simply following Jesus wherever he went. That is what we are supposed to do, right? Have faith, and follow him? Yet, “While” they are in the boat, a squall, great storm occurred. Not just a few rain drops, it specifically mentions squall, which is a severe storm with high winds, rain, and possible thunder and lightening.
I don’t know about you, but I’m not big on storms. I’m ok with a little rain in the comfort of my own home, but living in the Midwest when those huge storms hit, I get antsy. AND that is indoors. With a roof over my head. A place of shelter. These men where out at sea!

Now imagine being in a boat, not a cruise ship, not a place of luxury, a boat. Probably like a little dingy, a small fisherman’s boat and a big storm comes. I mean crashing waves, thunder, lightning, the whole shabang! Then the waves start to crash. The wind is howling. Probably a bit of thunder and lightening. Then water starts coming into their boat! But get this… Jesus is STILL sleeping! Out like a light. Took his Tylenol PM. Calm. Enjoying His “peaceful” nap. He had just preached and needed this break. His disciples “had” to wake him. They were all a mess, but he was “𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒎.” They wake him up and tell him about the storm. They are in a panic. They tell Him, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” Notice they call Him Master. Not once, but twice! They call this man whom they believe is the Lord over all, “Master” who is “with” them (There is that word again) in the boat….and it says, Jesus got up and “He rebuked the storm, and told it to be calm!” Definition of rebuke: express sharp disapproval or criticism. (Luke 8:25) He had just been woken up out of his nice slumber after a long day, and He was not thrilled with this storm being the cause of him getting woke up. Then He addressed the disciples.
Are you hearing this yet!?
The disciples are amazed, why is he not worried? Jesus then asks them, “Where is “your” faith?
Luke 8:25 …In fear and amazement they asked one another, “who is this?” He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
I always thought when I read this, “These people have seen miracles! They had been with him for a bit. Watched Him heal people. Even raise a widows son at this point. How on earth could they not have faith in Him?! How do they question him?? Then I try to put myself in their position. They had only seen, miracles of healing. Raising from the dead. (Only seems like such a drastic word here. I think that would do it for me!) They saw physical miracles. They had not seen “these” kinds of miracles. The kind that only not affect men, but the entire universe. That even natural elements do what He says. Now that had to be a sight to see. Witnessing such a natural miracle. They went through this “with” Jesus. (There’s that word again.) He is the Lord over ALL things.
What I LOOOVVVEE about this story, is that Jesus told them to get into the boat. No matter how small it was… no matter how big the sea, no matter how big the storm, he 𝒌𝒏𝒆𝒘 it was coming. Often when we hear God’s word, we hesitate. Sometimes we think, “I don’t know Lord. That doesn’t seem like it will be enough? But here’s the thing. Jesus also knew how big the boat was and that He would be ‘with” them. (Ooops! There’s that word again!) He may have been quiet. Even seemed like he was sleeping. Like He wasn’t doing anything. But He was there! He never left them. He knew the size of the boat. He knew the size of the storm!
He also knew what was on the other side! ☜︎ Did you just read that? 👂🏻
He knew He was WITH them. They knew to call on him when they needed him, he “𝒌𝒏𝒆𝒘” what was on the other side. He saw the safety. He saw the land! He was “𝒂𝒍𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚” there! Have faith. No matter the situation, no matter the trouble you are facing. No matter the size of the boat. No matter the storm. He is already there. Just call to him, and have faith! He is “WITH” you.
